One of Four by Travis Davis takes readers on an emotional journey from New York Harbor to the battlefields of France, reliving the harrowing experiences of World War One through the eyes of an unknown soldier. Told through the pages of a 100-year-old diary, this story unfolds not only as a historical account but also as a bridge that reconnects a father with his estranged son. By retracing the soldier’s path from the brutal frontlines of France in 1917-1918 to his final resting place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, readers are immersed in the soldier’s world.
Discovered next to the soldier’s lifeless body by a young French girl, the diary captures his bravery, daily struggles, and life as he rose from a private to a non-commissioned officer (NCO). Through his words, we experience the pride, fear, and relentless stress of combat. The narrative reveals the sheer brutality of modern warfare and the profound courage it demanded from those who served. The soldier’s wish to return home alive is tragically unfulfilled, but his story continues to impact those who read it, providing a powerful testament to the human spirit amid the horrors of war.
