Hurt Runs Within

In “Hurt Runs Within” by Zoltan Vincze, the harrowing journey of Mackay Connolly unfolds against the backdrop of Afghanistan’s unforgiving terrain and the shadowy depths of PTSD.

Following an IED explosion that claims the lives of three comrades, Mackay Connolly finds himself teetering on the brink of oblivion. Medically discharged from the British army, he grapples with the aftermath of trauma, his psyche scarred by the horrors of war. Implanted with the revolutionary synthetic bone structure Phragazom, Mackay embarks on a tumultuous journey of physical and emotional healing.

Back in the UK, Mackay’s path intersects with that of Renee Cross, a wheelchair-bound military boxing instructor harboring her own demons. United by shared pain and a quest for redemption, their burgeoning friendship offers a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness of despair.

Yet, tragedy strikes once more when Mackay’s family falls victim to a devastating attack at an Australian winery. Driven by a relentless thirst for justice, Mackay and Renee embark on a globe-spanning odyssey to unravel the truth and confront those responsible.

But as they delve deeper into the heart of darkness, Mackay realizes the true extent of his synthetic upgrade’s power—a revelation that will forever alter the course of their quest.

Book Review:

Review 1:

As I read Hurt Runs Within, my mind kept playing the “bionic” sound. It brought back happy memories of a simpler time of my life.

This is not a nostalgic book, at least for most people. It is a fast-paced, violent techno-thriller with a sci-fi motif. Yet it is very human. Wounded soldiers, an autistic child, brotherly love and commitment to family are core elements of the story, and those elements resonated strongly with me. Read More.

Review 2:

I especially appreciated the chapters,  “The Benefits of Suffering”, and “Life Changes…God Does Not” Throughout the book Kay has key points highlighted and practical steps you can take to address the deep hurts in your life. There is also a small group or individual study guide in the back to help you get the most out of the book. Read More

Review 3:

First of all, let’s talk about the cover. It’s striking in red and the soldier and background give a good sense of atmosphere. The large, bold, white lettering are a great contrast.

Next we must mention the work that Zoltan has obviously put into this novel. The amazing detail speaks volumes for the amount of painstaking research that has certainly gone into this story, well done the author.

I found Hurt Runs Within to be quite a compelling read and found it to be something of a page turner. Right from the start, it will have you gripped as you are transported right into the action with Mackay, and again, the attention to detail throughout the book is top notch. The character depth was good and the story flowed well. Read More.

Review 4:

will admit I struggled with the first few pages when the jargon got a bit too technical and intense although it was interesting with the medical side. After that I easily got into the story and I really enjoyed it, especially when MacKay teamed up with Cross to go and see his brother. It appears that Cross is good for MacKay in the short time that she has known him.

The author has written a good story with two threads, one being set in England and one in Australia, with a link to join them. It has an Army background with MacKay and Cross as they meet through PTSD talks. It shows that the author has done a lot of research before writing this book and incorporated it in this book. The plotting is good as is the storytelling. The attention to detail is good while the prose is excellent and everything is explained well. Read More

Review 5:

Firstly, let’s just appreciate the amount of research that must have went into this book as Zoltan’s attention to detail was absolutely spot on! I did find it quite difficult to keep up with this book and felt it definitely took me a bit longer to read than my usual speed as it was really hard for me to process what was happening. I’m not sure why this was, maybe because it’s a genre I’m not used to reading.
