Reviews:
1. I love Sarah MacLeans historical romance so I thought I’d give this a try. The change to contemporary fiction doesn’t always go well. However, this was a fun, engaging read. It actually made me laugh out loud at points. There were parts I don’t love but it was a solid, fun read. I look forward to her next book. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book but I absolutely LOVED it.
I knew Sarah McLean could write as I’ve enjoyed her previous novels, but this one is just, frankly, beyond excellent. I was already recommending it at 20% in! The family in this novel is emotional, complicated, and funny. Each character was so well- drawn. And the love interest was the icing on top of an already compelling situation. I’d read more women’s fiction if it was all like this!
2. Sarah MacLean is one of my all-star favorite authors. She’s a legend within the historical romance genre, so I was slightly anxious about her foray into contemporary romance.
First and foremost, MacLean offers an exceptionally well written story about family dynamics, grief and kids, and love in all its forms. She is meticulous about writing craft, and this book is no exception. It is single POV from Alice’s perspective with one chapter from each of her sibling’s perspectives sprinkled through the book.
I absolutely loved the plot of this book. It was angsty and heavy on drama. Sarah clearly understands the bittersweet quality of grief. The family was believably dysfunctional.
The only place I struggled was with its clarification as a romance novel. I never thought I would say that as she is such a titan in the genre. However, the storyline with Jack did not feel like the primary story. It felt secondary to the family melodrama at play. I still feel like it’s a gorgeous novel, but I just wasn’t that invested in Jack or them being together. This novel has the HEA/HFN required for a romance, but the other requirement-that the romance be the primary storyline of the book- didn’t feel fulfilled.
Nonetheless, I would recommend this book to anyone (perhaps with the exception of someone currently processing through grief). The audiobook is also excellent and a great addition to the reading experience. All together I would give it a 4.5.
3. This is a wonderful read. Easy and fun. The inheritance game is intriguing. I was able to guess one of the surprises early on but that was okay. This is really a romance novel and it reminded me why I don’t read them more often. I would love the desire and thrill of an early love affair again. But as a 71 year old woman married over 40 years those days are gone. But I would take a Jack in my life anytime.
